What is Anhedonia
Anhedonia is the lack of interest, enjoyment or pleasure from life’s experiences. For example, you may not want to spend time with others. Or you may have no interest in doing activities that previously made you happy.
There are many reasons why you might have a lack of interest in activities:
- A mental health condition, for example, depression, anxiety and/or PTSD.
- A life-changing event, for example, a natural disaster, a serious medical diagnosis, or the death of a family member, friend or even pet.
- Work has turned into a toxic environment, for example, you are working long hours or have no control over your schedule.
- Changes in your social situation, for example, a divorce, cyberbullying, or domestic abuse.
Any of these can cause severe feelings of unhappiness, lack of motivation, and disinterest in activities that used to bring joy. These conditions can make you feel numb or like you feel nothing at all.
A Red Flag: Rumination
Rumination is a way of thinking that involves obsessively replaying past or future scenarios. It is really about a habit of getting stuck in a mental loop of repetitive, negative thoughts. Rumination is a negative process that causes you to overthink a situation without ever finding a resolution.
Your rumination often tricks you into believing that your rumination is actually your brain trying to “figure something out.” How wrong you are! Again, rumination is about overthinking, not about problem resolution!
Another aspect of rumination it that is focuses on your feelings. Your negative feelings. One of the things that people feeling down do is to think repeatedly about how they are feeling. They think about what they no longer enjoy. It is circular thinking that can make life significantly worse.
While complaining about your situation or ruminating might feel like you are doing something about how you feel, in reality, you are only making yourself feel worse.
I saw an anonymous meme recently. The essence of the meme was, “Things that are out of your control should be out of your mind.” In other words, if you can’t do anything about something, stop thinking about it.
Identify problems that you can solve and take action on them. In taking action, you will start to feel better.
Solutions
Anhedonia does not need to be a lifelong affliction. You can do something about it. You do not need to stay stuck.
Three Brains
Have you ever heard of the Three Brains? The Three Brains is about how you process information in your human, mammal, and reptile brains. When you are processing information in your human brain, you are looking forward; you are thriving; you are a person of action. When you are living in your mammal brain, you are living life in the present; you are surviving. When you are living life in your reptile brain, you feel pessimistic; you are just trying to get by.
People who are living in their mammal or reptile brains are the ones who are most likely to experience anhedonia. For more information on The Three Brains please click for article.
Learning how to change your mindset from your reptile brain to your mammal or human brain may take some effort. Some people seek the support of family and friends. Other people seek guidance from mental health professionals. Some even seek medication.
Socialization
If your feelings of unhappiness are driven by loneliness or a lack of meaningful social connections, it can help to reach out to a trusted friend or family member. Having lunch or coffee with someone, even once or twice a week, may help relieve feelings of loneliness and give you something to look forward to.
Paradigm Shift
A paradigm shift occurs when the usual way of thinking about or doing something is replaced by a new and different way. Lift your right hand. Look at the back of your hand. Now flip your hand over and look at the palm of your hand. You have just created your own visual for the paradigm shift: you have looked at your hand from one side (one perspective), and then looked at your hand from the opposite side (the opposite perspective).
Visualize this activity when you are in need of a paradigm shift! Or just ask yourself one question: “How can I think about this situation or event differently?”
Healthy Choices
Healthy habits will give you a solid foundation on which to build back your joy in life. Give yourself a chance to feel better by making sure you are doing basic things to maintain your health and mental well-being.
- Activity: Keep your body moving!
- Hydration: Are you drinking enough water each day?
- Sleep: Poor sleep habits can be hard on your body as well as your mind.
Consider Professional Help
Last, but certainly not least, is seeking professional help. What do you do if you’ve tried all the above and you still find that nothing makes you happy? At that point, you may wish to consider enlisting the help of your doctor or a mental health professional.
Loss of pleasure and motivation can be a sign of clinical depression or anxiety which can sometimes have a biological cause. Depression can be treated with therapy and/or medication so that your mind has a chance to feel positive again (through the release of positive chemicals in your brain).
Summary
If you find that nothing makes you happy anymore, start with your mindset, address your physical and mental health, restart activities that you previously found enjoyable, and then take stock of your situation.
If you still feel a lack of enjoyment or motivation, you may be living with clinical depression, which is not a problem you can solve on your own.
Remember that there is no shame in reaching out for help if you need it. If you have tried all the previous suggestions without any improvement, it’s important to reach out to your doctor or a mental health professional for help.
